Awful product! Stay away from it! July 28, 2010 Comprador de Amazona 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am quite new with routers and I needed one so I could spit my online service between my laptop and my Wii.
I decided to go with this one from Buffalo because it is a japanese company and I always expect from such great quality, plus I own several USB flash memories by the same company (but bought directly from Japan).
There weren't any Buffalo products near my area so I ordered via amazon. The installation was somewhat hard for me, specially considering that back then I had no idea on routers, but I managed to place it. And due to my ever mentioned lack of experience, I imagined all routers had the same problem, that images can't be fully downloaded with a single try.
But what made me experience this product as a piece of garbage was the following, it no longer functioned properly after updating the latest firmware. Yes, the very same firmware that I downloaded from Buffalo's official site was the thing that made the router go kaput.
Enraged, I sent the router back to amazon and I asked for credit over getting the same product brand new since I knew the same thing will happen again.
Next thing that happened is that many recommended me a Netgear router, and so I went to my local Walmart to get one and the difference with the Buffalo one is quite big by far. Pictures were able to download easy with no need of constant refreshing.
Also, I never managed to work the router with my external hard drive as it says, and the AOSS didn't work with my Wii, when the Wii was made for it.
At the end, this router is not worthy any money as it crashes just for updating it! But have I lost trust on Buffalo as a company? So far, other products by them have been so far good. But could it be because I had to get them from Japan, and they send trash overseas? Couldn't get a Buffalo router from Japan as they are too expensive over there.
Great Product July 27, 2010 jelart I got this product to replace my existing Wireless G. What I need most is the range. This product is very good. But still not not good enough to get to my pool side. I have to re-locate it to new location. It's working perfectly now.
It's effortless to set up. However, after I re-located it, I could not log on again. I have to call the customer service. It's very helpful and solved the problem. However, I had to wait for 50 minutes to get through.
Overall, I liked it. I can watch instant movie online by my pool side.
Works like a champ with DD-WRT firmware July 26, 2010 Shawn Clover (San Francisco) I never tried out the Buffalo firmware--first thing out of the box I loaded on DD-WRT open-source firmware. DD-WRT can be frustrating at first, especially when trying to figure out the convoluted way of adding multiple DHCP reservations, but once I got everything set up, the router performs like a champ.
I'm on a 100MB/s up/down shared pure ethernet connection for internet, and the router handles at least 70MB/s up and down with no problem. I have a full-time server running non-stop torrents, flac music, HD video, etc, along with various media clients and other machines on my gig-E network, and the router has handled everything perfectly. I can't say the same about the D-link DIR655 that I replaced with the Buffalo--the D-link often choked with the workload I threw at it.
Wireless N is noticeably stronger from the Buffalo than the D-link as well. Very impressive router.
A solution for seamless wireless distribution July 18, 2010 Ram I have been struggling with spotty wireless coverage in my house. I tried several range extenders and position, but they were either unreliable or still left me with vast patches of "dead-zones". After several months of research I settled on a combination of Buffalo Tech.'s WZR-HP-G300NH with WHR-HP-G300N. The former is the "master" router and the latter "slave" access point. The setup was a struggle, since the instructions were not clear on how to activate and setup the WDS function in the two wireless devices. After a frustrating four hour tinkering, I gave up and called Buffalo's customer service and was prepared to take the units back if they did not solve my problem. I was pleasantly surprised by the quick response and knowledgeable guidance that they provided. Within a half-hour I was up and running and now I don't have any dead spots in my house. The two units are communicating extremely well and the speed of the wireless communications has improved tremendously. Of course, I have disabled AOSS and WPS functions on the router and the AP, Don't know what will happen if I reactivate either or both of these functions!
My recommendation: If you need to do this, ensure you have two Buffalo units to setup. It is much easier with customer support and overall reliability.
Disappointing July 13, 2010 SDR 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had a Trendnet MIMO b/g router for 3 years. It's been a workhorse, and still is. But I bought a couple of DVD players to stream web video, and one of them is located in a room far from the Trendnet router. It picked up the Trendnet's signal, but it was weak, and the DVD player often dropped the signal altogether.
So I decided to buy a new router. I wanted (i) better range and (ii) adding "n" (the wireless receiver of the DVD player has b/g/n). This Buffalo looked ideal (HP - high power). Bought it. What a disappointment. The Buffalo's signal at the distant DVD player is LOWER than the signal from the Trendnet router. I compared the signals not only using the DVD player display, but also using various sniffers. OK, I thought, maybe even though it LOOKS weaker, it'll somehow be "understood" better than the Trendnet? Nope. The DVD player still dropped the signal. If this is High Power, I'd hate to see the regular version.
No problem, I thought, I'll set the Buffalo up as a wireless access point and place it halfway between the Trendnet & the DVD player. Note that the ad on this Amazon page says that it DOES work as a wireless AP (using WDS) but darned if I could get it going (and I am reasonably computer-literate). I spent AGES trying to get that working, no success. I investigated, and Buffalo forums say that this router cannot be used as a wireless AP -- it has to be cabled. So I linked the Buffalo to my Trendnet using an ethernet cable, then I moved the cabled Buffalo nearer to the DVD player, and the wrieless signal from the Buffalo to the DVD player was better than the signal from the Trendnet (which is not surprising -- the Buffalo was nearer than the Trendnet). And the DVD player held on to the Buffalo's signal. But I didn't want to permanently snake ethernet cables through my house. This is 2010, after all.
Bottom line -- I bought an Engenius wireless repeater for $45. It arrived last night. I had it set up in 10 minutes, put it at the halfway point (no cables needed, obviously), and now the signal to my DVD player is 3-4 bars, and streaming is flawless.
The Buffalo is going back to Amazon (Thanks Amazon - great service & return policy, that's one reason I shop here !!)
