I purchased 2 of these units to setup WiFi for a mountain condo building (3 floors by 5 units). Both units are mounted on opposites end of the building on the top (3rd) floor. Setup was relatively easy (maybe not if a first timer). The one time I had a question for Trendnet (prior to purchase) their response was prompt and helpful. Units are attached to a DSL modem/router. Since we can only get 7MB DSL service I have limited the APs to 11b. So can't comment on higher speeds. So far all units are reporting good service.
These units are hard to beat for the price. Not as powerful as the Cisco units but you can buy 2 (or more) for the same price.
Note: Units have been installed about 5 months now at a condo building in the Colorado mountains at about 9000 feet. Units are mounted outdoors. Temperature range in that time has been about 85 to -20 F. So far so good.
So far so good June 30, 2009 J. Wu 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Our outdoor wireless network currently spans about 1000 feet with buildings and walls in between and while our current outdoor access point (the D-Link DWL-7700AP PoE 5dBi 802.11a/802.11g 54Mbps Outdoor Wireless Access Point works well, it just can't reach the farthest end of our network. We recently added this Trendnet access point as a wireless repeater and our wireless range has increased greatly (from 30% signal to over 90% in certain spots).
Setup is easy if you have experience with static IP addresses. I did not use the included CD except to read up on all the features of this device. I docked one star because the manual doesn't seem complete - certain sections such as when it talks about the different modes (access point, wireless repeater, etc) are very brief and seems to assume the user knows a fair amount of background information.
As with the D-Link 7700AP, the power and ethernet port are located on the bottom of the device, making it difficult to prop this thing on a table if you don't want to mount this to a wall or pole. The access point management software is easy to use but fairly standard of an outdoor access point.
Our current network uses a Linksys WRT160N Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router, the D-Link DWL-7700AP PoE 5dBi 802.11a/802.11g 54Mbps Outdoor Wireless Access Point and this Trendnet access point. Stability is good - no resets needed so far in the two weeks of testing.
Pros: Works out of the box, setup fairly easy, metal construction, manual written in understandable English. What's neat is that this access point comes with a wall/pole mount that can swivel either up/down OR left/right (depending on how you install it), making it easier to point your wireless signal in a particular direction.
Cons: Price, 9dbi seems borderline "high-power", no ethernet cable supplied. As with many Trendnet products, you really don't know what accessories you might need until you purchase the item and read the manual. For example, if you are thinking about attaching Trendnet's 14 or 19dbi antenna to this device, you may also need their outdoor arrestor kit and their N-type cable.
