5 out of 5 stars Impressive   August 29, 2010

After dealing with so many terrible linksys/dlink/netgear routers, this trendnet access point was a dream. The firmware and configurability is excellent. It was super easy to set up. I had to tweak it slightly to get better speeds. Make sure you switch the default Channel Bandwidth from 20 to 20/40. And if you can switch the AP to wireless-N *only*, you will get better speeds.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps it should have the microsoft brand on it   August 27, 2010

There are several things wrong with this product. The setup, the hardware, and implementation.

Setup: Setup is windows only. I am a Mac user, I don't even have a windows machine. Unlike other routers, access points or networking tools of this sort, by default you cannot log into this device using the IP address. It must first be configured through the setup disc, then you're allowed to log in as needed. I had to take the device elsewhere and connect it to a network where a buddy had a windows machine to do the config. Had amazon been upfront about this, I would have bought a different product.

Hardware: Amazon advertises this as a wireless N 300 mb/s access point. However, this is not entirely true. The wireless may indeed be 300 mb/s, however the wired connection is only 100 mb/s. This means that the actual through put from the wireless device to the wired device is only 100mb/s. If the wired connection on the device was gigabit, then you'd be able to get the full advertised speed out of the device.

I really wish I had not bought this device. I should have picked up a time capsule or something instead. Now I'm stuck with another worthless device. Do yourself a favor and get something better.

5 out of 5 stars Trendnet always has great products   August 18, 2010

Great access point, extended my wireless for my entire house. I no longer have week spots in the upstairs where I use my wireless the most. My only regret is I wish I would have got two while they were on sale. Very easy setup and easy to change settings. Has most of the functionality of a full size router with security and everything.
would highly recomend this product. I have been using it for almost a year now and not a single problem with it.

4 out of 5 stars Great upgrade to Pre-N, but WDS repeater bandwidth terrible   August 6, 2010

I had a DLink DI-624 Pre-N router and bought two of these to upgrade to N and add a repeater. This is an "upgrader" instead of a "router" because it doesn't have more ports to plugin ethernet cables and it doesn't offer DHCP for wifi connections - your existing router has to do that. Overall I liked it for an upgrade and it expanded my range. WDS repeater mode using a second unit was a dissappointment but thankfully the expanded range solved the problem anyways.

The upgrade went very smoothly and expanded my signal reach and strength. I downloaded Xirrus Wifi Monitor gadget to find an open channel and judge signal strength, and Passmark's Performance Test's "Advanced Network Test" feature so internet traffic didn't affect testing. There was one area my DI-624 wouldn't reach at all that now has 40% signal. Another area was unreliable and now has 50%.

Things didn't go well when I added a second one as a repeater. First there's no instructions for this model. I found instructions at TrendNet for a different model and learned you have to put both in WDS mode and list the other's MAC addresses. You also need the exact same SSID, Channel, and security. Something strange happens if you leave both connected by ethernet to your router - all network traffic ground to a halt! Instead you have to access the second one by Wifi only and remember the IP address that DHCP assigned. Unfortunately what I found was that although range was extended, throughput dropped like a rock. WDS is supposed to drop bandwidth in half since everything has to be repeated, but I found that it dropped more like 4x and usable range actually shrank. I couldn't get a usable signal & throughput in the worst part of the house while using the repeater.

So, the good news that it does the advertised job of upgrading your network. Forget about this implementation of WDS but hopefully you won't need it and can save yourself the bucks.

1 out of 5 stars Intially worked great, after a few weeks suddenly unreliable   June 11, 2010

This access point was easy to setup and I quickly had a wireless n network up and running. After only a few weeks though it is in need of nearly daily resets to keep it going. So far my impression of TRENDnet products is not great.
